Witchhazel is a large shrub or small tree native to North America. Generally it ranges in height from 15-30 feet tall. The leaves are 3-5 inches, long and broadly elliptical, with 5-7 straight veins on each side. The leaves are dull dark green, turning yellow in the fall. The flowers are 1 inch wide with bright yellow petals which bloom in the fall. Fruit is 1' 2" long and elliptical. Witchhazel is found in moist soils in understory hardwood forests. The aromatic extract of leaves, twigs and bark is used in mildly astringent lotions.
